Slaves Waiting for Sale
Updated: Jul 30, 2022

This painting is called, “Slaves Waiting for Sale”. The English artist, Eyre Crowe, first sketched it in 1853. Once he had completed the oil painting it was exhibited in 1861. It got mixed reviews and you can read some of the reviews at the link below. My students are tasked to look closely at how Crowe depicts the individual Africans as each having their own personality. This is such a contrast to the faceless and inhuman depictions of other sketches of the same time period.
